SAN JOSE -- Most of the southbound U.S. Highway 101 lanes in San Jose are
open again following a hazardous materials spill in the area that shut the
highway down earlier this morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.

All lanes except the furthest right-hand lane were reopened at 2:43 p.m.,
CHP reported.

The Blossom Hill Road on-ramp will remain closed until about 6 p.m.,
according to the CHP.

Crews are on the scene managing the area, since most of the cleanup has been
completed, CHP reported.

Highway 101 was closed in both directions after the spill was reported
around 9:15 a.m. today.

Officials said that because of the close of one of the state's major
north-south arteries, traffic is backed up "everywhere" in the San Jose
area.

The hazardous materials will be packaged and delivered to a hazardous
materials facility in the Central Valley, Ziese said.

Residents of 50 to 60 homes in the area of the spill were told to shelter in
place, but that order has since been lifted.
